Diagnosing Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow
Diagnosis of epicondylitis is based on a detailed clinical examination. As a specialist in orthopaedics and sports medicine, Dr. Diedrich assesses the exact location of pain, grip strength and performs specific tests such as the Cozen test (tennis elbow) and the Golfer's test (golfer's elbow).
Ultrasound allows us to visualise the affected tendon, detect micro-tears and guide injections precisely. In complex cases, MRI may be needed to exclude other pathologies.
It is important to distinguish between acute epicondylitis (less than 6 weeks) and chronic epicondylitis (more than 3 months), as the treatment approach differs. We also assess biomechanical factors such as sports technique and workplace ergonomics.
Non-Surgical Treatment for Elbow Pain
Our goal is to avoid surgery whenever possible. Epicondylitis responds excellently to conservative treatment when applied correctly and with patience.
A central conservative option is extracorporeal shockwave therapy, whose efficacy in chronic epicondylitis is described in published studies. It can stimulate tendon regeneration and reduce pain — indication and outcome are assessed individually.
For chronic or resistant cases, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) offers excellent results. We use growth factors from your own blood to accelerate healing of the damaged tendon.
Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C is an ideal complement that reduces inflammation, relieves pain and accelerates recovery. Many professional athletes use it regularly.
Physiotherapy with eccentric exercises is essential. We teach specific exercises that strengthen the tendon in a controlled manner and prevent recurrence.
Elbow Specialist in Palma de Mallorca
Elbow pain is one of the most frequent consultations at our orthopaedic practice in Palma. Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow) are overuse injuries affecting athletes and people with repetitive manual tasks alike.
Why Does Tennis Elbow Occur?
Contrary to its name, only a small proportion of tennis elbow cases are actually related to tennis. The most common causes include:
- Repetitive movements at work (computer use, tools, cooking)
- Racquet sports (tennis, padel, badminton)
- Incorrect technique in sports or occupational activities
- Age (most common between 30–50 years)
- Lack of warm-up or sudden overload
Golfer's Elbow: Not Just for Golfers
Golfer's elbow affects the inner side of the elbow and, while less common than tennis elbow, can be equally debilitating. It frequently appears in golfers with poor swing technique, throwing athletes, weightlifters and manual workers.
Shockwave Therapy: First-Line Treatment
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is an established conservative option for chronic epicondylitis. This non-invasive method can stimulate tendon regeneration, improve blood circulation and reduce pain, and in many cases can be a conservative alternative to surgery. The usual protocol is 3–5 sessions at weekly intervals — indication and outcome are assessed individually.
PRP: Regenerative Medicine for the Elbow
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) represents the cutting edge of regenerative medicine. We extract a small amount of your blood, centrifuge it to concentrate the growth factors and inject them directly into the damaged tendon under ultrasound guidance. It is especially effective for chronic cases.
Cryotherapy for Athletes
Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C is an exceptional tool for athletes with epicondylitis. In just 3 minutes it significantly reduces inflammation, provides immediate pain relief, accelerates tendon recovery and enhances sporting performance.
Sports Medicine Expertise
As a Diplom-Sportlehrer (qualified sports scientist) and sports medicine specialist, Dr. Diedrich understands the specific demands of each sport. For tennis players, we analyse backhand technique, grip and string tension. For golfers, we evaluate swing mechanics, grip and follow-through. We do not just treat pain — we identify and correct the biomechanical causes to prevent recurrence.
Preventing Recurrence
- Eccentric exercises to strengthen the tendon
- Correct technique in your sport or work activity
- Proper warm-up before activity
- Epicondylitis brace when needed
- Equipment modification (racquet, golf clubs)
