Football Sports Medicine in Mallorca
Football injury treatment in Mallorca: knee (ACL, meniscus), ankle sprains and muscle strains. Dr. Diedrich – certified sports physician. Book today.
Mallorca's climate allows football all year round — in amateur and league teams as well as sports-tourism tournaments. As a Diplom-Sportlehrer (certified sports teacher) and active athlete, I regularly treat typical football injuries with a conservative approach: avoiding surgery whenever possible.
Common Football Injuries
Knee Injuries (ACL, Meniscus)
The knee is the most heavily loaded joint in football. Changes of direction, tackles and challenges cause injuries such as:
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear
- Medial and lateral meniscus injuries
- Medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
- Chondromalacia and cartilage damage
Not every knee injury needs surgery. Using ultrasound and examination I assess whether conservative treatment with physiotherapy, PRP and targeted strengthening can be enough.
Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are the most frequent acute injury in football, usually from rolling the foot on a bad landing or after contact.
- Lateral ligament injury
- Syndesmosis injury in more severe trauma
- Chronic instability after repeated sprains
Muscle Injuries and Groin Pain
Sprints and explosive movements cause hamstring and adductor strains. Overload of the groin and hip region can lead to athletic pubalgia, a persistent pain that limits kicking and acceleration. Most of these cases resolve without surgery through specific physiotherapy and injections when needed.
Cryotherapy and Recovery for Footballers
Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C is an ideal recovery tool in football:
- Recovery between matches: Reduces soreness and muscle inflammation in congested schedules
- Muscle injuries: Speeds the anti-inflammatory phase
- Knocks and bruises: Decreases pain and swelling
- Performance: Improves freshness for the next session
Biomechanical Analysis and Prevention
The DIERS 4D gait analysis detects imbalances, asymmetries and loading problems that increase injury risk. With this data I design custom insoles and prevention programmes. I also recommend:
- Warm-up and FIFA 11+: Prevention programme with strength and proprioception drills
- Core and adductor strength: Key to preventing groin pain
- Proprioceptive work: More stable ankles and knees
- Load management: Avoiding sudden spikes in minutes and matches
Injury on the Pitch – What to Do
In case of injury during a match:
- Immediate measures: PRICE protocol (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
- Don't force a return: Early return is the main cause of recurrence
- Medical assessment: Seek help if there is joint locking, instability or inability to bear weight
After initial care, I offer urgent appointments for ultrasound diagnosis and continued treatment.
