Orthopaedic Treatments in Mallorca

Advanced conservative medicine. Our goal is to avoid surgery whenever possible through innovative and effective treatments.

Conservative Approach – We Avoid Surgery

Our primary goal is to avoid surgery whenever possible. Surgery carries risks (infection, bleeding, nerve damage) and a significant failure rate. With innovative conservative treatments, we achieve comparable or superior results to surgery in the majority of cases.

Evidence-Based Medicine

All our treatments are supported by scientific research. We do not offer pseudoscientific therapies. We combine the best of German medical expertise with state-of-the-art technology.

Featured Treatments

  • Cryotherapy: Used by professional cycling and athletics teams
  • SpineMed: Non-invasive spinal decompression for herniated discs (efficacy described in published studies)
  • Shockwave therapy: Established conservative option for chronic tendinitis
  • PRP: Natural regeneration using your own growth factors

Trilingual Care

The entire consultation is conducted in English, Spanish or German according to your preference. As an English-speaking orthopaedic specialist in Palma de Mallorca, Dr. Diedrich is the natural choice for British expats and international visitors who want clear, jargon-free communication about diagnosis and treatment.

Sports Medicine Expertise

Dr. med. Heiko Miguel Diedrich is a qualified sports physician (Diplom-Sportlehrer) and an active athlete himself. As a sports medicine specialist based in Mallorca — Europe's largest sports destination — he understands the demands placed on cyclists, golfers, tennis players and runners training on the island.

Treatments at a glance

Below you will find a short description of each procedure offered at our practice — with indications, typical course and the combinations we use most often. Click any heading for the full treatment page.

Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C

Whole-body cryotherapy uses extreme cold (down to -110°C) for 2-3 minutes to reduce systemic inflammation, accelerate recovery and ease pain. It is used for arthritis, chronic pain, sports injuries and for recovery after intensive training. To our knowledge, our chamber is the only whole-body cryotherapy facility in Mallorca and is particularly valued by cyclists, runners and tennis players preparing for tournaments.

SpineMed spinal decompression

SpineMed is a computer-controlled decompression system used for herniated discs, sciatica and chronic lower back pain. Precise, gentle traction creates negative pressure within the disc, which can support disc rehydration and decompression of pinched nerves. A typical course is 15-20 sessions over 4-6 weeks, combined with physiotherapy and core stabilisation.

Ultrasound-guided injections

Targeted injections deliver medication (local anaesthetic, corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid) directly to the source of pain. We use real-time ultrasound guidance, which improves precision and safety. Common indications include tendinopathies, bursitis, joint pain and radicular irritation.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)

Focused shockwave therapy is a well-documented conservative option for chronic tendinopathies such as plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfer's elbow and calcific shoulder tendinitis. The standard course is 3-5 weekly sessions and is often combined with PRP, injections and physiotherapy.

PRP – platelet-rich plasma

PRP therapy uses growth factors from your own blood, prepared by centrifugation and injected under ultrasound guidance into the affected tissue. PRP is used for tendinopathies, partial tears and cartilage problems. A course typically consists of 1-3 injections several weeks apart.

Surgery – when a referral makes sense

Dr. Diedrich does not perform surgery himself. If, in rare cases, an arthroscopic operation (for example a meniscal or ACL tear) is medically necessary, we provide a targeted referral to a specialist surgeon. Our practice focuses on conservative and regenerative procedures such as ultrasound-guided injections/infiltrations, which help avoid many operations.

Manual medicine (chiropractic therapy)

Dr. Diedrich holds the German medical specialty qualification in Manual Medicine (Manuelle Medizin). Specific manual techniques address spinal blockages, joint dysfunction and muscular tension — frequently for cervicogenic headache, sacroiliac dysfunction and lower back pain. Treatment is performed by a qualified physician and is not comparable to non-medical applications.

Regenerative medicine

Under regenerative medicine we group biological procedures that support the body's own healing — including PRP, hyaluronic acid injections, orthomolecular therapy and selected phytotherapy. The goal is structural regeneration rather than purely symptomatic relief.

Medical acupuncture

Physician-administered acupuncture (body and ear acupuncture) is used for chronic pain, muscular tension, migraine and as part of multimodal pain management. In Germany it is recognised as an evidence-based option for chronic lower back and knee pain.

Custom orthotics & insoles after gait analysis

Based on a DIERS 4D gait analysis we manufacture individual insoles and orthotics that correct biomechanical imbalances and offload overuse syndromes (plantar fasciitis, jumper's knee, sacroiliac strain). Particularly relevant for runners, hikers and athletes training on Mallorca's varied terrain.

Trigger-point therapy and dry needling

Myofascial trigger points are a frequent source of local and referred pain. Using ischaemic compression, dry needling and manual therapy we release these points specifically. Common applications include chronic neck pain, tension-type headache and lumbar trigger points.

Kinesio taping

Functional taping supports muscles and joints without restricting range of motion. We use it as an adjunct for sports injuries, tendinopathies and after injections, allowing patients to resume activity quickly.

Cupping therapy

Cupping is a traditional technique we use mainly for myofascial tension, fascial adhesions and chronic lumbar pain. Combined with manual medicine and trigger-point therapy it can improve mobility and reduce pain.

Frequently asked questions

What orthopaedic treatments does Dr. Diedrich offer in Mallorca?

We offer a broad spectrum of conservative and regenerative procedures: whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C, SpineMed spinal decompression, ultrasound-guided injections, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, PRP therapy, manual medicine, acupuncture, trigger-point therapy, cupping, kinesio-taping and custom orthotics. Dr. Diedrich deliberately does not perform surgery — the focus is on conservative and regenerative medicine, with referral to a specialist surgeon if an operation is ever clearly indicated.

How is the right treatment chosen for me?

Treatment selection follows a thorough initial consultation: medical history, clinical examination, ultrasound when needed, review of MRI or X-ray imaging and assessment of previous treatments. Based on this we design an individual, stepwise plan — starting with the least invasive options. Indication and outcome are reassessed at each follow-up.

Do your treatments really avoid surgery?

Our goal is to avoid surgery whenever possible. For many herniated discs, tendinopathies and arthritic joints, conservative procedures such as SpineMed, shockwave therapy, PRP and targeted injections — combined with structured physiotherapy — are a well-founded alternative. We only recommend surgery when conservative measures have been exhausted or when there is a clear surgical indication.

Are these treatments covered by insurance?

We are a private practice. Most international and private insurers reimburse the services after submission of an itemised invoice; English-speaking patients with travel or expat health insurance typically receive partial or full reimbursement depending on their policy. We provide all documentation needed for your insurance claim and discuss costs transparently before treatment begins.

Are regenerative therapies like PRP and cryotherapy safe?

PRP is prepared from your own blood and injected under ultrasound guidance; the procedure is well established in sports medicine. Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C is generally well tolerated when performed correctly and when contraindications (e.g. severe cardiovascular disease) are observed. Possible reactions, contraindications and limitations are discussed before every treatment.

How many sessions are typically needed?

It depends on the procedure and indication. Shockwave therapy: typically 3-5 sessions. SpineMed: usually 15-20 sessions over 4-6 weeks. PRP: 1-3 injections at intervals of several weeks. Cryotherapy: as single sessions or in series of 5-10, depending on the goal (recovery, chronic pain management, sports preparation). The exact plan is set individually.

In which languages can I be treated?

Dr. med. Heiko Miguel Diedrich is a German specialist with Spanish medical accreditation and many years of practice in Mallorca. Consultation, diagnostics and informed consent are conducted in English, Spanish or German as you prefer — without translators and without compromising clinical detail. This is a particular advantage for British expats and tourists who want to discuss medical decisions in their own language.
