SpineMed Therapy – Spinal Decompression Palma
Spinal decompression for herniated disc, back pain. German-engineered, non-invasive technology. English-speaking specialist Dr. Diedrich. Reserve online.
SpineMed is a state-of-the-art spinal decompression system that treats herniated discs, sciatica and chronic lower back pain without surgery. It uses computer-controlled technology to apply precise traction to the spine, creating negative pressure within the intervertebral discs.
This negative pressure can support disc rehydration, herniation retraction and decompression of pinched nerves. The treatment is generally painless; efficacy and indication are described in published clinical studies (see references at the bottom of this page) and are assessed individually.
Initial Assessment
Before starting treatment, we perform a comprehensive examination including:
- Detailed medical history
- Neurological examination
- Review of MRI or X-rays
- Assessment of herniation severity
- Determination of a specific treatment protocol
During the Session
You lie comfortably on the SpineMed table. Padded harnesses are placed around the pelvis and thorax (for lumbar treatment) or head and shoulders (for cervical treatment).
The computer applies cycles of traction and relaxation over 20-25 minutes. The force is gradually adjusted according to your tolerance and response. You can communicate with the therapist at all times and stop the treatment if necessary.
After the Session
You rest for 5-10 minutes after treatment. You may experience immediate relief. You can resume normal activities, although we recommend avoiding heavy lifting on the day of treatment.
Expected Results
Published clinical studies with SpineMed (see references below) describe:
- Pain reduction in a relevant proportion of patients
- Improved mobility and quality of life
- The possibility of avoiding surgery in many cases
- Lasting results when combined with exercises and stabilisation
Individual outcomes may vary; indication and treatment success are assessed during the initial examination.
Maintenance
After the initial protocol, we recommend:
- A core stabilisation exercise programme
- Occasional maintenance sessions (1-2 per month)
- Correct workplace ergonomics
- Avoiding risk factors (excess weight, sedentary lifestyle)
SpineMed in Mallorca – Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression
Back pain and herniated discs are the most common cause of sick leave. Back surgery carries significant risks and a failure rate of 10-40%. SpineMed offers a non-surgical alternative with results comparable or superior to surgery, without the associated risks.

What is a Herniated Disc?
The intervertebral discs act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae. They consist of a gel-like centre (nucleus pulposus) surrounded by a fibrous ring (annulus fibrosus).
A herniated disc occurs when the nucleus pushes through a tear in the ring, compressing nearby nerves. This causes:
- Intense lower back pain
- Sciatica: pain radiating down the leg
- Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
- Muscle weakness in severe cases
How Does SpineMed Work?
Unlike traditional traction, SpineMed uses a computer-controlled protocol that:
1. Creates Negative Intradiscal Pressure
Precise traction reduces pressure within the disc to -160 mmHg. This negative pressure:
- Allows fluids, oxygen and nutrients to enter the disc
- Promotes rehydration of the dehydrated disc
- Facilitates retraction of the herniation to its original position
2. Decompresses Pinched Nerves
By increasing the space between vertebrae, pressure on the nerves is released. This immediately relieves radicular pain (sciatica).
3. Stimulates Natural Healing
Increased blood flow and nutrients to the disc stimulate the body's natural healing processes. The disc can gradually repair itself.
SpineMed vs. Back Surgery
Our goal is to avoid back surgery whenever possible. Comparison:
Possible Risks of Spinal Surgery
- Infection: a recognised risk reported in the literature
- Nerve injury, potentially with permanent neurological consequences
- Bleeding and anaesthetic complications
- Persistent symptoms: a proportion of patients does not experience the expected improvement after surgery (see editorial policy)
- Post-laminectomy syndrome: chronic pain after surgery
- Prolonged recovery: typically several months
- Irreversibility: surgery cannot be undone
Characteristics of SpineMed Therapy
- Non-invasive: no surgical risks from the procedure itself
- No anaesthesia or hospitalisation
- Generally painless: many patients describe sessions as relaxing
- Short recovery: most patients resume daily activities immediately
- Efficacy: described in published studies on disc decompression — indication and outcome are assessed individually
- Reversible: no permanent structural changes
- Repeatable if needed
Treatment Protocol
Initial Phase (Weeks 1-2)
- 4-5 sessions per week
- Traction force gradually increased
- Goal: reduce inflammation and acute pain
Consolidation Phase (Weeks 3-4)
- 3 sessions per week
- Optimised traction force
- Introduction of stabilisation exercises
Maintenance Phase (Weeks 5-6)
- 2 sessions per week
- Intensified exercise programme
- Preparation for discharge
Combination with Other Treatments
SpineMed is most effective when combined with:
- Cryotherapy: rapidly reduces inflammation
- Manual medicine: corrects spinal blockages
- Physiotherapy: strengthens the core and prevents recurrence
- Epidural infiltrations: for severe cases with intense pain
