When Should You Call for an Orthopaedic Emergency?

Contact us immediately if you experience:

• Acute sports injuries: Sprains, muscle tears, dislocations
• Severe pain that does not improve with painkillers
• Inability to move a joint or limb
• Visible deformity of a joint
• Severe swelling after an injury
• Open wounds with exposed bone
• Persistent numbness or tingling

What to Do Before You Arrive

RICE Protocol for Acute Injuries

• Rest: Stop the activity immediately
• Ice: Apply ice for 15-20 minutes every hour
• Compression: Light bandage (not too tight)
• Elevation: Keep the injured limb elevated

Do NOT Do the Following

• Do not apply heat in the first 48 hours
• Do not attempt to relocate a dislocation yourself
• Do not walk on a severe ankle or knee injury
• Do not take anti-inflammatory medication if a fracture is suspected (may increase bleeding)
