Swimming Sports Medicine in Mallorca
Swimming injury treatment in Mallorca: swimmer's shoulder, back and breaststroke knee. Dr. Diedrich – certified sports physician. Book today.
With its climate and waters, Mallorca is an exceptional destination for swimming, open water and winter training. As a Diplom-Sportlehrer (certified sports teacher) and active athlete, I treat the typical overuse injuries of swimmers with a conservative approach.
Common Swimming Injuries
Swimmer's Shoulder
The shoulder is the most affected joint in swimming due to the repetitive stroke. The most frequent complaints are:
- Subacromial syndrome (impingement)
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Biceps tendinopathy
- Instability from hypermobility
Treatment is conservative in the vast majority of cases: muscle rebalancing, scapular work, manual medicine and, if needed, PRP or shockwave therapy.
Neck and Lower-Back Pain
Poor technique overloads the cervical and lumbar spine: always breathing to the same side, insufficient trunk rotation or too much breaststroke and butterfly. Technique re-education and mobility work are essential.
Breaststroke Knee
The breaststroke kick overloads the medial collateral ligament of the knee. Adjusting the kick technique, temporarily reducing volume and strengthening the stabilising muscles resolves most cases.
Cryotherapy and Recovery for Swimmers
Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C helps recovery after high-volume sessions:
- Muscle recovery: Reduces inflammation after intense training
- Shoulder: Eases inflammation in rotator cuff tendinopathies
- Double sessions: Allows the next session with less fatigue
Ultrasound Diagnosis
Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows real-time assessment of the rotator cuff and biceps tendons, detects inflammation or tears and guides injections precisely. It is a key tool for diagnosing swimmer's shoulder.
Prevention for Swimmers
The best injury is the one that never happens. I recommend:
- Rotator cuff work: Specific strengthening and scapular stability
- Thoracic mobility: Improves the stroke and unloads the shoulder
- Technique: Bilateral breathing and adequate trunk rotation
- Load management: Increase volume gradually
