Triathlon Sports Medicine in Mallorca
Sports medicine for triathletes in Mallorca: swim, bike and run injuries, DIERS 4D gait analysis and recovery. Dr. Diedrich. Book your appointment.
Mallorca is one of the great European training destinations for triathletes — with climate, cycling roads and open water all year round. As a Diplom-Sportlehrer (certified sports teacher) and active athlete, I treat the overuse injuries of all three disciplines with a conservative, preventive approach.
Common Triathlon Injuries
Swim Segment – Shoulder
The repetitive stroke movement overloads the shoulder. Swimmer's shoulder (subacromial syndrome, rotator cuff tendinopathy) is the typical injury of this segment.
Bike Segment – Knee and Back
Long hours on the bike overload the knee and lower back. A poor riding position (bike fitting) causes anterior knee pain and back complaints. See also the specific injuries of cycling.
Run Segment – Foot and Ankle
Running concentrates impact injuries: plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy and iliotibial band syndrome. Running is often the segment where the accumulated load of the whole training week appears. More on the treatment of foot and ankle.
DIERS 4D Gait Analysis for Triathletes
The DIERS 4D gait analysis records posture, spine and loading pattern without radiation. For triathletes it is essential because it:
- detects asymmetries and imbalances that overload knee, hip and foot
- allows custom insoles for the run segment
- reduces the risk of plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy
- optimises running economy and efficiency
Body Composition with DEXA
The DEXA scan accurately measures muscle mass, fat and bone density. In endurance sport it helps ensure that weight loss does not compromise muscle mass or bone health, a real risk in triathletes with high training volume.
Cryotherapy and Recovery
Whole-body cryotherapy at -110°C is ideal for managing a triathlete's fatigue:
- Double sessions: Speeds recovery between training sessions
- Inflammation: Reduces overuse complaints
- Load blocks: Makes high-volume weeks more tolerable with less risk
Prevention and Load Management
Most triathletes' injuries are from overuse and can be prevented by managing load well:
- Gradual progression: Avoid sudden volume spikes in any discipline
- Strength: Core and stability work to protect the knee and back
- Recovery: Rest and cryotherapy as part of the plan
- Biomechanics: Bike fitting and insoles based on the gait analysis
